My gum recession is so bad and I’m so scared I will lose my teeth. Will they get loose as this continues?
Having looked after so many people over the years, we know that the thought losing your teeth can be so scary.
It could be that we’ve got some good news for you.
Gum recession is NOT a disease.
Yes, you read that correctly: gum recession is not a disease! In fact, often gum recession affects otherwise entirely healthy teeth.
However, two addition things to point out:
- 1. If you have gum inflammation such as gingivitis, your gums will be at higher risk of receding.
Sadly a lot of people with inflammation avoid brushing their teeth because they might find it slightly sore or be worried if they bleed.
But this can only make the problem worse not better. The cure is a gentle but thorough Daily Self-Performed Care.
- 2. If you have gum disease which is resolving, the gum will always recede
In fact, as your gum pockets become more shallow (and easier to clean!), 75% of this is due to gum recession.
It might sound strange, but this is expected and a normal part of the healing. Ultimately, without bone present (if you have periodontitis, some of that bone will have been harmed), gum can not be present. Amongst dentists we always say “bone sets the tone”.
So your aim is to get those gum pockets stabilised.
You will win the battle in the bathroom at home, not at the dental office.
