Question
What causes periodontitis?
Answer
On a very basic level, plaque bacteria (oral hygiene) + a susceptible person (genetics) + lifestyle factors (added risks) can all be part of the problem.
BUT there is no single cause.
This is because everybody’s trigger point for inflammation is also unique to them.
So the point at which the problem can arises is different from person to person. Some people are quite resistant to gum problems, even if they smoke and have several medical conditions. But some get very aggressive forms of the disease even as a healthy teenager.
